Cadillac Convertible Hybrid Concept

Posted by carshowz On August - 19 - 2011

Cadillac Hybrid Concept CarCadillac designers pulled the wraps off the luxury division’s new Ciel concept car at a sneak preview prior to the official public debut, which will take place in Monterey, Calif. this Sunday, August 21, on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Without saying “retro,” General Motors chief designer Ed Welburn described the Ciel’s “hint of a fin.” The striking show car touches on its heritage while providing a vision of where Cadillac design might be headed in the near future. GM claims the open-top four-seater could be powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the company’s “3.6-liter direct injection V-6 engine, paired with a hybrid system using lithium-ion battery technology.”

The Ciel’s distinctive interior features modern touches like hidden LCD displays.
Long the leader of the luxury market, Cadillac sales now lag behind overseas rivals like BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz. But Cadillac has regained ground on competitors in recent years with a renewed focus on distinctive design. Confident there’s an opportunity for growth, GM management has given Caddy the green light to add a variety of new models, including the ELR plug-in hybrid, approved just this week, as well as the small Cadillac ATS and larger XTS.

“You need a flagship in your portfolio to be successful in the luxury market today,” says Clay Dean, the brand’s lead designer. The Ciel is a hint of what such a car might be. Nearly as long as the big Cadillac Escalade sport-utility vehicle, the prototype was shown in convertible form, but if taken into production would likely also be offered as a full-sized sedan, company insiders said.

Cadillac Hybrid Concept CarCiel, French for “sky,” carries a double meaning. There’s the reference to the convertible design, but the name also suggests that the sky’s the limit, as far as GM is concerned, if Caddy can pull off a turnaround. That likely depends on tapping into more than just the U.S. market – though it remains the largest luxury market in the world. The Ciel, whether in convertible or hard top form, would also target China, now the world’s largest automotive market – and a place where increasingly affluent buyers have shown a predilection for large, lavishly equipped cars.

“We didn’t want to be nostalgic; we need to look to the future,”Dean insists, though it’s hard to miss the retro touches, including the vestigial fins, noted by GM styling director Welburn, which recall Caddies of the early to mid-‘60s, however, and not the excessively finned 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.

The Ciel show car also borrows a bit from Caddy’s traditional competitor, Lincoln, with the long, somewhat slab-sided shape split by both traditional front and rear “suicide” doors. Modern motorists might recognize the look from the Lincoln Continental convertible used on the HBO TV series, Entourage. In fact, were the Ciel to go into production it would be the first four-door convertible since that Lincoln left production close to a half century ago.

The distinctive exterior of the Ciel – with its hockey-stick LCD lamps framing a massive grille – is more than matched by the interior, which is outfitted with acres of sumptuous leather and trimmed in wood and chrome. There are a variety of distinctive, if unusual, details, such as the zippered amenity pockets and a pull-out scarf to provide a little warmth for a rear-seat passenger.

Cadillac lifted the covers on the new Ciel show car on the same evening as Lexus revealed its next-generation GS sedan. The latter boasts an industry-record 12.3-inch LCD screen. The Ciel car goes to the other extreme. At first glance, there appears to be no monitor at all, but a closer inspection reveals that several smaller displays are built into the wing-like instrument panel.

That fits a design philosophy that stands in sharp contrast to the direction of many luxury car makers. Rather than flash all the high-tech features, “We’ve hidden the elements you don’t need,” Dean says. The smaller monitors light up only when needed, and much of the driver’s essential information appears on a discreet head-up-display projected on the windshield. Other interior components have been moved out of sight altogether, including the climate control vents.

Cadillac Hybrid Concept CarWhat you do see, such as the brightly-lit chronometer-style speedometer, is meant to impart a sense of elegance, but more in the form of upscale architectural design, suggested Dean, than a traditional automotive layout.

Will Cadillac build the new Ciel? For the moment, officials stress that there isn’t even a platform in the corporate portfolio to build it on. But “it’s a statement car,” according to its lead designer, and one intended to say that Cadillac is making a comeback. That message would largely be lost if Ciel were just another in a long line of show cars that never see the showroom.

The good news for those who like the design is that GM has been considering its options for a flagship car that’s even larger than the upcoming XTS. A senior Cadillac source says that a go/no-go decision will likely be made within a matter of months.

A positive response for the Ciel, which will now make its way to the auto show circuit, would help nudge the project forward. Expect GM to measure potential demand not only in the U.S. but in other markets, including the aforementioned China. That’s where the Buick brand began its turnaround, noted Welburn, and Caddy is counting on building demand there as well.

If that happens, that’s no guarantee the Ciel itself would reach market. But according to Dean, Cadillac definitely wants and needs “an open-air car.” The prototype would almost certainly be altered for production, but considering Cadillac’s assertion that distinctive styling is critical to its future, some of the Ciel’s more attractive elements had better make it to market.

2011 Chevrolet Volt – 1000 miles a tank

Posted by carshowz On April - 8 - 2011

The latest in vehicle technology will allow drivers 1000 miles per fill up….wow, for lack of better words!

2011 Chevrolet Volt owners are doing just as General Motors hoped: they are plugging in their cars every night. Thanks to this, Volt drivers are seeing “1000 miles before they fill up the gas tank,” Volt vehicle line director Tony Posawatz told Automotive News in an interview.

That number may sound incongruous with GM’s own information — the company says the Chevrolet Volt can travel up to 35 miles on electricity alone, and a further 344 miles using an onboard gasoline engine. Chevrolet Volt spokesman Rob Peterson explains that because the majority of owners charge their vehicle every night and drive fewer than 35 miles each day, they can go for days without using a drop of gasoline, and in some cases, up to 1000 miles before refilling the Volt’s 9.3-gallon fuel tank.

Peterson said that testimonials from buyers of the $41,000 (including destination) Volt reveal they have a strong interest in driving on electricity as much as possible. They charge the vehicle regularly and typically have short daily commutes.

“Customers are buying this vehicle and fitting it into their lifestyle,” Peterson said. “They’re using [the Volt] as we intended.” GM has been happy with Volt owners’ experiences, but are you surprised by the findings? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Chevy Camaro Seeks More Ground In Muscle-Car War.

Posted by carshowz On February - 17 - 2011

CamaroCHICAGO–General Motors Co. has pulled ahead of Ford in the battle of the muscle car, and at the Chicago auto show this week it made clear it hopes to keep the heat on its cross-town rival.

In 2010, the Chevrolet Camaro outsold the Ford Mustang for the first time since 1985. GM sold 81,299 Camaros last year, 7,583 more than  Ford’s sales of 73,716 Mustangs, according to Autodata Corp.

Both auto makers played down the storied rivalry, which halted temporarily in 2002 when GM stopped making the Camaro. It reintroduced the car, as a true, rear-wheel drive muscle car, in 2009. But now GM is planning an even brawnier car. In Chicago, it unveiled a new, super high performance Camaro – the ZL1 with a 550 horsepower with a yet-to-be revealed price tag.

The ZL1 comes in addition to the 2011 Camaro convertible, going on sale this month.

Ford marketing chief Jim Farley said the company isn’t worried. Sports cars usually come on strong and then fizzle within 18 months to two years, he said. In the meantime the Dearborn auto maker will compete for performance buffs with a lineup of sportier versions of vehicles like the Ford Focus compact car.

The competition is a sign that the horsepower battle lives on as the auto industry braces for rising gas prices and tougher fuel economy regulations.

GM head designer Ed Welburn pointed out that today’s ZL1 is a much different car than its predecessor, reflective of the changing tastes of even the most loyal muscle car enthusiasts.

“The old car was pretty raw, basically a drag car, and people loved it,” Welburn said. “This car is such a balanced vehicle.”

Report: General Motors Planning 30 MPG 2011 Chevrolet Camaro

General Motors’s 2011 Chevrolet Camaro fell behind in the V-6 horsepower war with the Mustang. The solution? Bump horsepower up to 312 ponies. The same thing has now happened with the fuel economy wars and GM’s solution once again is to boost the Camaro’s ratings – this time to 30 mpg – to better compete with the Mustang.

News of the fuel efficient Camaro package comes courtesy of what look like an early release on the official EPA Web site and GM Inside News. The EPA shows two fuel economy ratings for Camaro’s equipped with the 3.6-liter V-6 and six-speed auto — one rated at the same 18/29 mpg (city/hwy) as the 2010 model and the 2011 model with a higher 19/30 mpg rating. That highway rating falls just short of the Mustang’s 31 mpg, but will allow Chevrolet to add the Camaro to the list of vehicles that achieve over 30 mpg on the highway.

We spoke with a Chevrolet spokesperson that wouldn’t confirm the existence of special fuel-efficent model, but confirmed that the Camaro will receive several “non-engine related mpg upgrades.” This information all but verifies the report on GMI, which says that the fuel economy boost comes from a lower, 2.92 final drive ratio. Unfortunately, the lower final drive ratio will cause a slight drop in performance too.

According to GMI, the more fuel efficient Camaro will be part of the new 2LS package and will retail for around $24,700. That includes the six-speed automatic transmission (the only available option) and is about $1000 more than a base 1LS Camaro with a six-speed auto. The new model will reportedly be available this spring.

Next C7 Corvette to Get All-New Small-Block

Posted by carshowz On August - 6 - 2010
According to sources inside GM, the C7 Corvette will be one of the first cars fitted with the next-generation small-block V-8 GM has announced it is investing $890 million to develop and manufacture.

GM has confirmed the new small-block V-8s will feature aluminum blocks and heads, direct-injection, and a new combustion system. Our sources say the C7 engine will displace 5.5 liters, with a target output of about 440 horsepower.

The new small-block will retain a traditional overhead-valve layout, ensuring compact dimensions and lower manufacturing costs. Prototype engines reportedly are already running on test beds in Detroit.

You might call them deliberately oblivious to reality. You might call them overly optimistic. To the hundreds of Washington area Corvette enthusiasts strolling through the parking lot of Sport Chevrolet in Silver Spring yesterday, the idea of a General Motors bankruptcy was an afterthought — a simple conversation piece during a celebration of an American icon.

“It doesn’t matter. It’s the car,” Fermon “Vince” Venson, 63, said while polishing his 2005 machine-silver Corvette. “Corvette lovers, you’ll find they don’t care about anything else.”

Engines roared as red, yellow and blue sports cars glistened in the sunlight at the Corvette Club of America’s 36th annual car show yesterday, unintentionally scheduled to fall just 24 hours before GM was expected to file for bankruptcy. Conscientious owners with such license plates as “SUPRCAR,” “58DREAM” or simply “OURS” hurried to polish their hoods and get ready to be judged. Parents who brought their kids and owners who did not recalled younger days, when they wanted nothing more than to grow up and drive a Corvette.

“Dreams of our youth,” said Don Ellenberger, 70, of Manassas, standing behind his bright yellow Z06. “When you were in high school, you always wanted a fast car but could never afford it. I guess it’s the realization of a longtime dream.”

Don Haller, the Corvette Club of America’s president, said those at the show were obviously saddened by American automakers’ recent financial troubles, but that did not lessen their enthusiasm to bring out their new — and old — wheels.

“That’s all covered in the boardroom,” Haller said of a potential GM bankruptcy. “This here is about people.”

Patricia Reynolds, 46, of Silver Spring said checking out the 2010 Camaro offered her “a little escape from reality.” The show, she said, was a throwback to better times in the American auto industry and an homage to cars that when you “step on the gas, they actually go.”

“It highlights the time when we were the top automaker,” she said.

Even GM bondholder Danny Dambrauskas, 65, of Laurel was more eager to talk about his Z06 — which he jokingly referred to as his “bad habit” — than the state of the company he could soon own stock in. He said a GM bankruptcy would be “really good” because it would give the company more leverage to negotiate with unions. In any case, he said, he is optimistic about the company’s future.

“Somebody will always come up with something,” he said. “I think everything’s going to turn out all right.”

GM representatives were on hand to show off the future of their business: two fuel cell cars that run on hydrogen. The Chevrolet Equinoxes, which consume no oil and make virtually no noise, stood in stark contrast to the rough-and-tumble Corvettes on display. As of noon, about a dozen people had given them a test drive.

“It kind of shows that there’s always going to be a place for petroleum, but there’s also a place and a venue for this,” said Monica Murphy, a GM rep who was offering test drives of the Equinox. “This is the future here.”

Chevrolet Introduces the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport

Posted by carshowz On April - 25 - 2009

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky — The 2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport model debuted here on Friday at the National Corvette Museum, harking back to GM’s glory days. The introduction was a bright spot amid the gloom about the automaker’s dramatic summer plant shutdowns and with the continued threat of a possible GM bankruptcy lurking in the background.

The Grand Sport replaces the Corvette’s previous Z51 package and bundles such items as wider front and rear fenders, Grand Sport badges, a Z06 front splitter and tall rear spoiler and an optional two-mode exhaust system. It comes in coupe and convertible models with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Sport gets the LS3 6.2-liter V8, which delivers 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque with the standard exhaust system. The optional two-mode exhaust system bumps power ratings to 436 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque.

Chevrolet spokesman Adam Denison told Inside Line on Friday that pricing is not yet available. He said the car will go on sale in September. He would not comment on production numbers.

GM describes the original Chevrolet Grand Sport as “a promising idea stymied by GM’s agreement to stay out of manufacturer-backed motorsports.” The planned 125 production models required for racing-class homologation were never built, but five prototypes based on the styling of the 1963 Corvette were hand-assembled under the supervision of Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. The five Grand Sport prototypes saw extensive racing experience throughout the 1960s in the hands of so-called “private” racers.

Chevrolet offered a limited-edition Grand Sport production model in 1996, commemorating the original racing cars.
